Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricket team captain. Nicknamed as the Little Master, Gavaskar was the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He has many unique achievements to his name.


Gavaskar was born in Bombay (Now Mumbai), Maharashtra. During his birth, he was accidentally exchanged with the child of a fisherman. His uncle discovered that the child was not Sunil when he couldn't see the latter's birthmark on the baby. Gavaskar was returned to his parents after that.

Sunil Gavaskar is the son of Manohar Gavaskar and Meenal Gavaskar. He was born in July 1949 to a Marathi-speaking household in Bombay, India. Kavita Viswanath and Nutan Gavaskar are his two sisters. It was Madhav Mantri, his uncle, who encouraged Gavaskar to take up cricket.

Meenal, the mother of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, was born on August 15th. She was the younger sister of Madhav Mantri, the former president of the Bombay Cricket Association and an Indian stumper.


She played a significant role in Gavaskar's early career by encouraging him to pursue his goals and helping him practice. She also maintained a scrapbook of articles on Sunil's pursuits, particularly from his early years, with her husband Manohar.


Meenal was instrumental in influencing Gavaskar's career. According to an interview in TOI, he used to play cricket with her every day in their home's tiny gallery, and she would bowl him. For instance, she began to bleed when Gavaskar struck her nose with a straight shot. Meenal wiped away the blood and kept bowling him with tennis balls.


At the age of 95, Meenal Gavaskar, the mother of renowned Indian cricket player Sunil Gavaskar, passed away in December 2022.


Sunil Gavaskar’s Father

Sunil Gavaskar’s father, Manohar Gavaskar, who hailed from a middle-class family, was a good player in club cricket. Sunil’s father passed away in May 2012 at the age of 88.

Kavita Viswanath and Nutan Gavaskar are the two younger sisters of Sunil Gavaskar. Kavita is younger than Nutan. Nutan served as the Women's Cricket Association of India's (WCAI) honorary general secretary, while Kavita is married to cricketer Gundappa Viswanath. According to a report in IndiaToday, Nutan said Sunil used to often carry Parle-G biscuits on his cricket tours to the West Indies.

Sunil Gavaskar is married to Kanpur-born Marshneil Gavaskar. The couple tied the knot in 1974. Marshneil is the daughter of an industrialist based in Kanpur.


Marshneil once went to take Sunil Gavaskar’s autograph while attending a cricket match in 1973. It is said that with the autograph, Sunil also fell in love and they got married the next year.
