Born on March 20, 2002, Gibbs is from Dalton, Georgia, U.S. He studied at Dalton High School in Georgia. In his senior year, Gibbs topped the state in rushing with 2,554 yards and scored 40 touchdowns. Gibbs wrapped up his high school tenure with notable achievements, amassing a total of 4,882 rushing yards and scoring 70 touchdowns. He received several accolades which include being named first-team all-state, the Georgia 6-A 2020 Offensive Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American by Sports Illustrated. Gibbs had even received an invitation to compete in the 2020 All-American Bowl. Gibbs chose to commit to Georgia Tech for higher education. After sitting out Georgia Tech's season opener, Gibbs made a significant impact in his collegiate debut against Central Florida, returning the opening kickoff for 75 yards.


He concluded the game with an impressive 219 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, earning him the title of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Week. By the end of the season, he was named an honorable mention All-ACC as a return specialist. Gibbs made a transfer to the University of Alabama, joining the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2022. Notably, in a triumph against #20 Arkansas on October 1, he delivered an outstanding performance with 18 carries for 206 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
