He began his hockey career in the QMJHL with the Moncton Wildcats, where he scored 29 goals and earned the Rookie of the Year title.

Under coach Ted Nolan’s guidance in 2005, Marchand scored 66 points in 68 games and helped Moncton win the President’s Cup. The team reached the Memorial Cup finals that year but fell short of victory. In 2006, the Boston Bruins selected Marchand in the NHL Entry Draft. He played the 2008-2009 season with the Bruins' AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, before making his NHL debut in October 2009. By 2010, he had secured a spot on the starting roster and played a key role in the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup championship win.
