Better known as "Johnny Hockey", the late Johnny Gaudreau was one of the established stars in the National Hockey League (NHL). He initially played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before playing college baseball at Boston College for the Boston College Eagles. He was drafted by the Calgary Eagles with the #104th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and arrived in the league as a left-wing in the 2013-14 season.
Johnny Gaudreau soon established himself as a valuable player to his team. He not only earned the Lady Byng Trophy in the 2016-17 season but also established his career highs in points with 84 points and assists with 60 assists in the 2017-18 season. He left to join the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2021-22 season and became the eleventh NHL player born in the United States to score at least 100 points, being second only to Patrick Kane. Unfortunately, his NHL career came to an end on August 29, 2024 when both he and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau passed away after being hit by a Grand Jeep Cherokee while riding bicycles in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, United States.
