Jhye Richardson made his Class A debut against Queensland on 21 October 2015, at the age of 19 years in which he scored 4 runs and conceded 34 runs in his spell of 6 overs. Unlike his Class A debut, his performance in his First Class debut was notable enough when he took 3 wickets in the first innings and 1 wicket in the second innings against Queensland.
On 16 January 2016, he made his Twenty20 debut for the Perth Scorchers in the 2015-16 Big Bash League. He made his first-class debut for Western Australia on 15 March 2016, during the 2015-16 Sheffield Shield season.
In the 2016-17 Big Bash League, Richardson took 11 wickets for the Scorchers and was awarded player of the match in the final after collecting 3/30 as the Scorchers beat the Sydney Sixers.
In November 2018, Richardson took a career high 8/47 in the first innings against New South Wales at Optus Stadium.

Richardson was acquired by the Punjab Kings in the IPL auction in February 2021, ahead of the 2021 Indian Premier League, as well as the Welsh Fire for the first season of The Hundred. He was purchased by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023 auction.
Richardson underwent hamstring surgery in March 2023, and as a result, he missed the IPL season. He was brought in by Delhi Capitals at the 2024 IPL auction for a whopping INR 5 crores. In February 2017, Richardson was called up to Australia's Twenty20 International (T20I) team for the series against Sri Lanka. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for Australia against Sri Lanka on 19 February 2017.
In January 2018, he was picked to Australia's One-Day International (ODI) team for the series against England. He made his ODI debut for Australia against England on 19th January 2018. He made his Test debut for Australia against Sri Lanka on the 24th of January 2019, and took three wickets in the first innings.

Almost a year later, he made his ODI debut against England on 19 January 2018. Again, Australia lost the match by 4 wickets but he took 2 wickets after conceding 57 runs in 10 overs. In January 2019, Richardson was added to the ODI team against India. He played the opening game at the Sydney Cricket Ground and returned with career-best stats of 4/26, including the wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli, to lead Australia to its 1,000th international victory in all formats of the game.
Richardson appeared in the final three matches of Australia's ODI series against India in March 2019, taking eight wickets as Australia recovered from a 0-2 series setback to win the series 3-2. Richardson injured his shoulder in the second match of the series against Pakistan in the UAE in March 2019, diving on the outfield. Regardless, in April 2019, he was nominated to Australia's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup where he was ultimately ruled out due to his injury

In his Test debut, which came against Sri Lanka on 24 January 2016, he took 5 wickets in the match which was instrumental in the Australian victory by an innings and 40 runs. In December 2021, in the second Ashes match against England, Richardson took his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

His T20I debut came against Sri Lanka on 19 February 2017 in which Australia lost the match by 2 wickets. His performance was very poor in that match with no runs or wickets coming from him.

In 2015, Jhye made his First-Class debut against Queensland at the age of 19. A few months later, he was named vice-captain of the U-19 World Cup squad of Australia.
Following the Junior World Cup, the pacer was given a Big Bash League (BBL) rookie contract by the Perth Scorchers team for the fifth season of the league, however he only played one game. The young pacer had a breakthrough BBL season in 2016-17, when his team won their third title and Jhye was named 'Man of the Match' for his three wickets in the BBL final. He made his first-class debut for Western Australia on 15 March 2016, in the 2015-16 Sheffield Shield.
