Tatenda Taibu Biography
Tatenda Taibu is a former cricketer from Zimbabwe. Taibu has been a wicket-keeper for the Zimbabwe side.
He was born on 14th May 1983 and has played in all formats of the game for the Zimbabwe side.
He holds the distinction of being the youngest test captain in history, as he captained and led his troops against a strong Sri Lankan outfit.
He is a right-handed batsman and was regarded as a replacement for one of the greats of the game, Andy Flower.
Taibu is known for his nimble footwork and his ability to soak up the pressure. The pint-sized wicketkeeper batsman played 231 matches in his career and has scored 5,426 runs at an average of 30.82.
Background
Taibu is a throwback to the traditional style of wicketkeeping, and his importance to Zimbabwean cricket was underlined when he was named as vice-captain for the tour of England in 2003, at a mere 19 years old.
Earmarked, Taibu was plucked from Churchill Boys High School to tour the West Indies in 1999, after impressing onlookers with his natural ability.
Taibu's abilities were talked about by many and had caught the eye of many in Zimbabwe and the selectors had a close watch on him.
Debut
Taibu made his first-class debut at the age of 16, and his debut for the national team against a strong West Indies lineup in 2001, at a young age of 18.
High Points
Following the player's rebellion in 2004, Taibu was appointed the captain of a relatively inexperienced team and Zimbabwe's plunge to the bottom began. His personal form during his tenure as a captain was very good. He brought out his best when he scored a 153 against Bangladesh in the 2004 series.
When Zimbabwe was back to playing Test cricket, Taibu stroked half-centuries in each of Zimbabwe's one-off Tests against Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand.
In the interim, he became the first Zimbabwe cricketer to set foot in the lucrative Indian T20 League when Kolkata Knight Riders picked him up in the draft.
Low Points
Following the prolonged slump of the team continued to take a toll. He found no backing from the board and after immense pressure, he retired from all forms of international cricket.
Taibu had a torrid start to his ODI career. The lowest point of his career came during the tri-series in Sri Lanka which also featured a strong West Indies side.
Club Career
He has played for clubs like Mountaineers, Cape Cobras, and Mashonaland. Taibu created history by becoming the first player from Zimbabwe in the 2008 IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Captaincy
Taibu was appointed the captain of an inexperienced team and Zimbabwe's plunge to the bottom began. His personal form during his tenure was very good.
Retirement
The roller coaster career was cut short by Taibu himself at the age of 29 as he shifted to focus on serving the church rather than playing Cricket.
