Coached by Marc Crawford, Matthews' style drew comparisons to Joe Sakic. His NHL debut in 2016 marked history with four goals, leading to a Calder Trophy win. Despite injuries, Matthews consistently delivered, scoring 40 goals in his rookie season and setting career highs. He won the Hart Trophy in 2021-22 as the NHL's MVP, becoming the first Maple Leafs player since 1954-55 to secure the honor. During the 2022-23 season, Matthews reached 500 NHL points, becoming the fourth-youngest active player to do so. He continued his impressive streak, scoring at least 40 goals for four consecutive seasons. After signing a four-year, $53 million contract in 2023, Matthews scored his 300th NHL goal during the 2023-24 season opener. His legacy extended with a historic overtime goal on January 3, 2024, making him the 10th player in NHL history with at least eight straight 30-goal seasons from the start of his career. Matthews will be looking forward to adding the elusive Stanley Cup to his trophy cabinet.
