Raised in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, by local hockey coaches, Marchand played for various junior ice hockey teams between 2004 and 2008. The Bruins scouted him during this time, ensuring his draft in 2006. After a season with the Providence Bruins in the AHL, Marchand made his NHL debut in October 2009. He played a crucial role in the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup win.
