Ravi Rampaul: A Brief Biography
Ravi Rampaul Biography
Ravi Rampaul is a West Indies cricketer, born on 15th October 1984 in Preysal, Trinidad. Rampaul is primarily a right-arm medium fast bowler who opens the bowling for his side. He bats right handed lower down the order.
Background
Ravi Rampaul made his first-class debut in the 2001-02 season and had a tremendous Busta Cup for Trinidad & Tobago, where he picked up 13 wickets in three games.
The following year, he was picked to play for the U19 West Indies team in the 2002 U19 World Cup. However, he had a very disappointing tournament as he took only 2 wickets in the three games he played.
He turned the tables again in the Carib Beer Cup in 2002-03, picking up 18 wickets and being the second highest wicket taker for his side.
Rampaul reappeared in the next U19 World Cup held in 2003-04 and had a more successful outing this time around, taking up 9 wickets at an average of 21.22.
Debut
Later in the year, Rampaul made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. He returned with figures of 0/38 and remained wicketless for the reminder of the series. The selectors kept faith in him for the series against South Africa and England. After taking only 11 wickets from his first 17 ODI’s, Rampaul was dropped.
Rampaul made his T20I debut against England at The Oval in 2007. He took 0/26 and was dropped after picking only five wickets from his first five matches.
Rampaul’s Test debut arrived finally in 2009 against Australia at Brisbane. It was another unimpressive debut, as he picked only a single wicket in the game and three more in the next four games. As a result, he was dropped.
Rise to Glory
One of the most impressive bowling displays of Rampaul was against India at Chennai in a ICC Cricket World Cup game in 2011. He took 5/51 and led the bowling to restrict India to a modest total from a strong position.
The most important performance of Rampaul’s international career was in the semi-final of the 2012 ICC World T20 against Australia at Colombo. West Indies had posted 205/4 and Rampaul set the tone with the ball in hand. He took 3/16 in his 3.4 overs and helped them through to the final.
Low Points
Rampaul’s career has been hampered by injuries recurring on a consistent basis. Although he uses the bouncer and the Yorker to a good degree, he lacks decent pace and hence finds it difficult to trouble batsmen in the absence of consistent swing.
Club Career
Ravi Rampaul appeared for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2013 and 2014 editions of the Indian Premier League. He took 13 wickets in the 2013 edition but lacked game time in 2014. He continues to represent the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.
Records
Ravi Rampaul holds the record for the highest score by a number 10 batsman in ODI cricket. He made an unbeaten 86 against India at Visakhapatnam in 2011 to gain the honor.
