Atlanta Falcons Depth Chart

The Atlanta Falcons, whose heyday has long passed, have not made it to the postseason in the past 7 years. Even after getting a new voice in the locker room (Raheem Morris) last year, the Falcons' win-loss column didn’t see any significant improvement. The biggest question going into the season for Atlanta is whether they will trade Kirk Cousins before the start of the 2025 season or keep him as a backup to second-year signal caller Michael Penix Jr., who is viewed as the team's future.

However, the good news for the Falcons is that they play in the NFC South, where teams like the Carolina Panthers (who have yet to prove their mettle) and the New Orleans Saints (who will mostly start the season with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback) reside.

What is the Atlanta Falcons' depth chart for 2025-26?

Atlanta’s depth chart has Michael Penix Jr. as QB1 and expensive Kirk Cousins as the backup ($40 million cap hit), as per Spotrac. Due to the heavy price tag attached to him, releasing Cousins is not an option for the franchise, as it will incur a significant loss for them. While there is a scenario where Falcons could trade Cousins to a quarterback-needy team before the start of the season, it all comes down to whether Cousins waives his no-trade clause or not. Cousins' heavy cap hit also tied general manager Terry Fontenot’s hands as he couldn’t make any big splash during free agency. Falcons, after releasing Grady Jarrett and losing center Drew Dalman in FA, added a body on the edge by signing Leonard Floyd.

Even after getting Floyd, Atlanta was still in dire need of pass rushers as they finished almost dead last in team sacks in 2024 (via FOX Sports). This showed when GM Terry Fontenot was extra aggressive during the 2025 NFL draft, adding Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. (after moving up) in the first round.
