The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona, competing in the NFL in its NFC West division. The 4-13 record last year does not show the full picture, as the team went on to lose 6 games by one score. After starting 1-8, Cardinals won 3 in their last 8 outings which featured Kyler Murray under center. The last time the Cardinals won a postseason game, Peyton Manning was still in the league. The Redbirds have only appeared in playoffs once in the last 8 years and in a division which features two SB contenders in 49ers and Rams along with improved NFC, it looks more and more difficult for Arizona to end their playoff drought in 2024.
The former 1st overall pick will be entering his 6th season in the league and the offense showed immense growth with him as the quarterback in the second half of 2023. The offense which had 4th most rushing yards in 2023 (via FOX Sports), will once again feature James Connor as the lead back, along with rookie Trey Benson backing him up. Marvin Harrison Jr. is a welcome addition to a pass-catching group that lost Marquise Brown and Rondale Moore in the offseason. However, Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson, Greg Dortch, and Trey McBride have given Arizona a formidable aerial attack. Paris Johnson Jr., Evan Brown, Hjalte Froholdt, Will Hernandez, and a newly added piece in tackle, Jonah Williams, will form the starting o-line.
Jonathan Gannon’s side of the ball saw heavy investment on the defensive line which gave up 143.2 rushing yards per game in 2023, which ranked dead last in the league (via FOX Sports). Bilal Nichols and Justin Jones were brought in to stout the interior, while investing a first round pick on rookie defensive end Darius Robinson. The strength of the defense lies on the back end which consists of All-Pro safety Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson, along with Sean Murphy-Bunting and Garett Williams in the cornerback room.
Jonathan Gannon’s second year will be a crucial one. In a league that has become short on patience and wants immediate results, anything less than a 6-win season might be enough for Arizona to pull the plug on the second-year head coach.
