Pittsburgh Steelers Roster
The Pittsburgh Steelers is a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, competing in the NFL in its AFC North division. Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett in 2022 as the heir apparent to Big Ben. However, the experiment failed and the Steelers sent him packing to Philadelphia in the 2024 offseason. Steelers GM Omar Khan instantly improved the quarterback room in a single offseason by making a big splash in the offseason by trading for former 1st round pick Justin Fields and signing Russell Wilson. The defensive duties will once again fall on perennial DPOY candidate T.J. Watt and 3-time All-Pro Cameron Heyward.
Steelers head coach gave the vote of confidence to Wilson for the starting position back in March but as of the first week of August, no clear starter has emerged. Kyle Allen will most likely back those two. One of the other hand, running back room is set in stone with Najee Harris and last year’s breakout player Jaylen Warren splitting the reps with Patterson rounding out the top 3. Receiving core saw a longtime presence in Diontae Johnson leave steel city to take his talent to Carolina. Pickens, Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson are surefire locks for the top wideout spots, after rookie Roman Wilson went down in training camp with an ankle injury which could potentially see him miss an entire season. Tight end group of the Pittsburgh Steelers roster will be represented by familiar faces in Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and younger Heyward. After releasing center Mason Cole and tackle Okorafor in the offseason, Pittsburgh appeared to have filled their vacancies by drafting Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier with their first two picks from the 2024 NFL draft. Longtime veteran Seumalo and Daniels will fill out the guard spots with Broderick Jones sliding in at right tackle.
There are no major changes when it comes to the interior with all 3 of Heyward, Ogunjobi and Benton returning to shore up the middle. Edge position consists of Watt, Highsmith and Herbig who combined to take down opposing QBs 29 times in 2023. Linebacker group saw a major overhaul with the arrival of Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson and Tyler Matakevich along with Cole Holcomb who is nursing his way back from a knee injury he sustained last year. The Steelers passing defense which ranked in the bottom half last year (via FOX Sports) saw quite a reshuffle which included exits of cornerback duo Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace. However, pairing newly acquired Donte Jackson (via trade) with sophomore Joey Porter Jr. forms a formidable 1-2 punch on the outside for 6-time SB champions. DeShon Elliot will be joining the safety group of Minkah Fitzpatrick, Damontae Kazee and Miles Killebrew to complete the secondary. Special team duties will once again be handed to the trio of Boswell, Johnston and Kuntz.
Mike Tomlin, who has never had a losing record, will be returning to lead the charge of black and gold for the 18th straight year. He will have a new companion on the offensive side of the ball in former Atlanta Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith, who will be in charge of calling plays on the offense.
