The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football team based in Cincinnati, Ohio, competing in the NFL in its AFC North division. Burrow is the only signal caller aside from Mahomes who has made it to the championship game every season when he has remained healthy since his arrival in the league. However, health has not been on his side as he has only played two full seasons since getting drafted 1st overall in 2020. Cincinnati is a Super Bowl contender with No.9 under center and it’s not going to change anytime soon. Let’s look where the Cincinnati Bengals roster stands among AFC contenders.
The quarterback is as good as his surrounding cast and the same is the case for Joe cool. Rookie Jermaine Burton will be tasked to fill in for Boyd, who took his talents to Nashville, while Chase and Higgins form a scary deep threat duo on the outside. Cincinnati’s running back room has been hit by the trade of Mixon to Houston. The team is banking on Zack Moss, who had a career year in 2023 and second year player Brown to replicate Mixons’s numbers on the ground. While Burrow always had elite weapons to throw to, the same cannot be said for the big men in front of him. The ever-revolving o-line will see former Patriot Trent Brown replace Jonah Williams at the tackle spot while Orlando Brown Jr., Karras, Cappa and Volson round out the starting five.
The Bengals defense which ranked 3rd in the league in 2022 (via FOX Sports) fell all the way to second last spot in 2023. The 26th ranked rushing defense from 2023 (via FOX Sports) has a new face in the interior in Sheldon Rankins paired up with Hill while DJ Reader left for Detroit. The star edge rusher Hendrickson who had a career year last season (17.5 sacks) will line up on the opposite end of Sam Hubbard. Pratt and Wilson are set in stone at the linebacker position but the defensive back group which was a bottom five unit last year (via FOX Sports) saw a familiar face change his position. Dax Hill will be lining up at CB after playing as a safety last season with Taylor-Britt and Hilton rounding out the top 3. Newly acquired Geno Stone along with Bell will serve as the last line of defense in Lou Anarumo’s scheme.
The biggest setback for Zac Taylor occurred in the form of Brian Callahan, who left for the head coaching gig in Nashville. However, Zac did not go out looking to find his replacement, and instead promoted their former quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher to OC.
