San Francisco 49ers Roster
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team based in the San Francisco Bay Area’s Santa Clara, California, competing in the NFL's NFC West division. They have played in four NFC Championship games and two Super Bowls in the last five years. But on both of those SB trips, they have come back empty handed. The Niners, who have been one of the most consistent and stacked teams under Kyle Shanahan, lacked high end talent at the quarterback position in the past. However, Brock Purdy’s arrival in 2023 has reaffirmed that Niners will remain a SB contender for the foreseeable future.
The 3rd-year signal caller Brock Purdy, who has never finished a season without an NFC Championship appearance, will be handed the key to operate under center with Joshua Dobbs, most likely as his backup. One of the best dual-threat RBs in Christian McCaffrey will be given the primary workload in the backfield, while Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason will be seeing to it that McCaffrey does not get exhausted. The longtime Niner, Kyle Juszcyk, will be once again seen repping red and gold at the fullback. The pass catching duties will see some familiar faces in Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Jauan Jennings with rookie Ricky Pearsall rounding out the top 4. At the tight end spot, only George Kittle is a lock with Logan Thomas likely looking as a frontrunner for TE2. San Francisco’s offensive line which projects Aaron Bank, Jake Brendel, Jon Feliciano, Colton McKivitz and 11-time pro bowler Trent Williams as starters, is seen as the weakest link on the team. In 2023, their 57.2 team pass-blocking grade was ranked 24th (via PFF) in the league.
The defensive side of the ball which has talent spread across each position saw most turnover took place at the line of scrimmage. Leonard Floyd (10.5 sacks in 2023) and Maliek Collins (5 sacks in 2023) were brought in to help the defensive line that gave up 159 yards/game on the ground in the playoffs (via FOX Sports). 2022 DPOY Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave, who combined for 17.5 sacks, will be returning on the defensive line. Dre Greenlaw’s ruptured achilles tendon in the SB has placed him on the PUP list and there is no schedule for his return which led to De’Vondre Campbell signing in the offseason. Campbell will form the starting rotation with perennial pro-bowler Fred Warner. The 49ers pass defense which ranked in the top half last season (via FOX Sports) consists of a solid secondary with Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green locking the top 3 cornerback position. Safety position is the easy one to predict, as there will be no change from last season with all four of Hufanga, Brown, Odum and Mustapha making their return. Special team also sees no change with 2nd year kicker Moody returning, alongside Mitch and Taybor.
The offensive wizard Kyle Shanahan will be returning for his 8th season as the head coach of the 49ers. However, there will be a new play caller on the defensive side of the ball. After relieving former DC Steve Wilks from his duties in the offseason, San Francisco promoted their former defensive pass game specialist and nickel's coach Nick Sorenson to defensive coordinator.
