The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland, competing in the NFL in its AFC North division. 2023 was the best team outing in the Lamar Jackson era for the Ravens, as for the first time the team reached the Championship game since drafting Lamar in 2018. Baltimore has only gotten better in the offseason by adding King Henry to their rushing attack which was already very lethal (1st in rushing yards in 2023). However, it remains to be seen whether last year’s stifling defense can replicate the same success without defensive wizard Mike Macdonald, who took the head coaching gig in Seattle. Furthermore, their divisional rivals will be much better than last year as Deshaun Watson and Joe Burrow are healthy to lead the Browns and Bengals respectively while Steelers added Russell Wilson/Justin Fields combo to make the worst QB room from 2023 somewhat competent.
Going into year two of Todd Monken’s offense, two-time MVP Lamar Jackson’s goal would be to get back to the Championship game once again and come out on the winning side of it which will make him reach the grandest stage of football i.e. Super Bowl for the first time. Adding Derrick Henry’s rushing prowess will surely give opposing defenses fits but losing Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins in a single offseason has made the back end of the RB room somewhat susceptible if Justice Hill doesn’t take the next step. Odell Beckham’s exit has opened doors for Rashod Bateman to flourish alongside Zay Flowers and Nelson Agholor, while the tight-end unit will see no change from last season as the trio of Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar are back together once again. The Ravens, who lost John Simpson, Kevin Zeitler and Morgan Moses on the o-line, will expect their young players to step up and provide stability ahead of Lamar.
Unlike their offensive counterpart, the defensive side of the ball saw very minimal changes as almost the whole defensive line from 2023 is coming back except Jadeveon Clowney. However, Kyle Van Noy was brought in on the edge to offset Clowney’s absence. Justin Madubuike, Michael Pierce, David Ojabo and Odafe Oweh give Baltimore one of the best units at the line of scrimmage in the whole league. Patrick Queen taking his talents to arch-rival Steelers has put more burden on Roquan Smith’s shoulders to lift the linebacker unit. The defensive backs room which saw both Ronald Darby and Rock Ya-Sin leave in free agency, got much-needed depth by the selection of rookie first-rounder Nate Wiggins. Both Marcus Williams and Kyle Hamilton will once again act as the last line of defense.
Elder Harbaugh’s biggest challenge going into year 17 will be watching that his team does not experience mental fatigue after making it to the AFC Championship game last year and losing it. Baltimore's promotion of Zach Orr to DC from within will provide defensive players with more of the same system that Mike Macdonald used to run.
