Dwaine Pretorius Career
Though Dwaine Pretorius had a pretty decent international career, he found his groove in franchise leagues across the world and became a T20 resource. He retired from international cricket to focus on T20 cricket.
Dwaine Pretorius Domestic Career
Dwaine Pretorius was selected to represent Highveld Lions for the now-defunct Champions League T20 in 2012, but he had to undergo surgery after a knee injury.
For the 2015 Africa T20 Cup, Pretorius was included in the North West cricket team. In the first season of the T20 Global League, he was named in Cape Town Knight Riders' squad, which was unfortunately canceled. Pretorius was named to Jozi Stars' squad for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament in 2018.
Pretorius won the T20 Amateur Cricketer of the Year award in 2011-12 and was awarded the MVP award for 2015 by the SA Cricketers’ Association.
He plays for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and was part of the victorious squad that won CPL 2023. In the final against Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), Pretorius was the pick of the lot as he picked up a four-wicket haul to bundle out TKR for a paltry 94. He was adjudged the 'Player Of The Match' for his match-winning performance in the final of CPL 2023 and finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 20 wickets at an economy of 7.10 in 13 matches.
In the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, Pretorius was part of the Galle Marvels squad that finished as runners-up against Jaffna Kings in the final. He finished the season with 13 wickets in 10 innings at an economy of 8.18.
In the SA20, Pretorius represents the Durban Super Giants.
Dwaine Pretorius IPL Career
Dwaine Pretorius was snaffled up by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 50 lakhs in the IPL 2022 mega auction. He was often used as an alternative to veteran West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. He was dismissed for a golden duck on his IPL debut but managed to pick up a couple of wickets. Pretorius scored a vital cameo of 22 off 14 balls against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians.
Pretorius was retained for IPL 2023 and was released ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.
Dwaine Pretorius International Career
Though Pretorius found a home in franchise cricket, he was a regular member of the South African national team. He debuted in all formats for the Proteas and announced his retirement from international cricket on January 09, 2023.
Dwaine Pretorius ODI Career
Dwaine Pretorius made his ODI debut for South Africa against Ireland in the only ODI in Benoni on September 25, 2016. He took a solitary wicket of Irish wicketkeeper-batter Gary Wilson on his ODI debut as SA thrashed Ireland by a mammoth margin of 206 runs.
Pretorius registered his first and only ODI fifty for South Africa against New Zealand in the second ODI of South Africa’s tour of New Zealand 2017 in Christchurch. He almost got South Africa past the line as he made a 61-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Andile Phelukwayo. Pretorius smashed four boundaries and a couple of sixes on his way to a 27-ball fifty.
Pretorius was selected for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 held in England and Wales. He was benched for the entire tournament as SA did not qualify for the semifinals. The 35-year-old all-rounder was drafted into the provisional squad of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to represent SA. He played a total of three matches and picked up five wickets at an average of 18.80 and an economy of 4.08, including a three-wicket haul against Sri Lanka for which he was adjudged the ‘Player Of The Match.’
He registered his career-best ODI figures when he picked up his maiden ODI four-wicket haul against England in the second ODI of South Africa’s tour of England in 2022. But his bowling efforts went in vain as England bundled out SA for 83 to win by a margin of 118 runs.
Dwaine Pretorius Test Career
Dwaine Pretorius made his Test debut for South Africa against England in Centurion on December 26, 2019, in a Boxing Day Test in England’s tour of South Africa 2019-20. Coming in at No. 7, he added a valuable 33 runs to take SA’s first-innings total to 284.
He broke a 72-run partnership between Ben Stokes and Joe Denly by dismissing the latter to pick up his maiden Test wicket. That was Pretorius’ only Test series as SA lost the series by 3-1.
Dwaine Pretorius T20I Career
Dwaine Pretorius made his T20I debut for South Africa against England in Southampton on June 21, 2017. He did not have a great outing with the ball as he conceded 20 runs off 2 overs and also did not get a chance to bat.
In the third and final T20I of Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa 2019, Pretorius was sent in to bat at No.3 and unleashed his batting prowess by smashing 77 off just 42 balls, his first and only T20I fifty, which included 7 boundaries and 3 sixes.
In South Africa’s tour of Pakistan 2021, Pretorius took his maiden five-wicket haul and registered the best-ever figures for SA in T20Is (4-0-17-5). He played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and was the joint-highest wicket-taker for South Africa along with Anrich Nortje. In the 5 matches he played, he took 9 wickets at an average of 11.22 and an economy of 6.88, including a three-wicket haul against the West Indies.
Pretorius missed out on playing the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 after he suffered a thumb injury during South Africa’s tour of India prior to the T20 World Cup.
