Morne Morkel: A Brief Biography

Morne Morkel Biography

Born on October 6, 1984 in Vereeniging, Transvaal in the country of South Africa, Morne Morkel performs as a bowler for the South African national cricket team. He is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm fast bowler.

Early Life

Born into a family of cricket lovers, he was often encouraged to play at school and local events.

Morne Morkel played for major teams such as South Africa, Africa XI, Delhi Daredevils, Easterns, Kent, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, St Lucia Zouks, Titans, World-XI, Yorkshire in the past.

During the age of 19, he was invited to play for Easterns against the touring West Indians alongside his brother, Albie Morkel.

International Debut

He made his international debut as a bowler at the age of nineteen, and as a batsman at the age of 21. His ODI debut was against Asia XI in June 2007 and his Test debut was against India in the year 2006.

Rise to glory

In October 2008, Morne and his brother Albie became the first brothers in 56 years to be named as South African Cricket Annual Cricketers of the Year in the same season.

Morne played an extraordinary role in the victories of South Africa, leading him to be named one of the best bowlers around the world, in turn holding him together with the team long enough to play a 50th Test match against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

In coming years, Morkel, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander became a unarguable threat to all their opponents.

Club career

Morkel signed to play for Kent County Cricket Club. Later he moved to play for Yorkshire County Cricket Club after a player of the team injured himself while Morkel was acting as a deputy.

However, the career there was short-lived since a few months into the tournament, Morkel himself suffered an injury.

In the Indian Premier League, he played for Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders. During his time with Delhi Daredevils in the fifth season, he took 25 wickets in 16 matches, winning him a Purple Cap.

Records

In tests, Morkel has won the Player of the Series award once in 2017 and Man of the Match twice in 2009-2010 and 2011-2012.

In ODI Cricket, he won Player of the Series award once in 2010-2011 and Man of the Match five times - once in 2011, twice in 2012, once in 2014 and once in 2015.
