Monty Panesar: A Brief Biography

Monty Panesar Biography

Monty Panesar or Mudhsuden Singh Panesar is an International cricketer, who played for England. The left arm spinner was born on 25 April 1982.

Ever since his debut, he has been a fan favourite. With his command on the spin of the ball and the black turban, he became someone who couldn’t be overlooked.

Background

Monty’s career gained rise because of his performances for the Northamptonshire teams. Due to these performances, he was selected for the Under-19 team in the year 2000.

In 2001, he made his first-class debut against Leicestershire. In this match, he performed very well and picked up 8 wickets for 131 runs.

Debut

Monty made his Test debut on 1 March 2006 against India. He went on to take three wickets in his first match.

He played his first ODI on 12 January 2007 against Australia. His performance in this match was not great. He took only one wicket and conceded 46 runs.

Rise to glory

Panesar rose to prominence in his career very quickly. He established himself as the first choice spinner very quickly.

In his sixth test itself, he managed to get the first five wicket haul, when he picked up 5/78 against Sri Lanka. In the following season against Pakistan, he had some great time as he collected 17 wickets in four test matches.

After this, in the 2007 home season against West Indies, he picked up 23 wickets in four test matches.

Low points

As Graeme Swann returned to the team against India in 2008, Panesar started losing his place as the main spinner of the team.

By the end of the year 2009, his international career was under doubt and had to resort to leaving his life-long county Northamptonshire and move to another.

Club career

During his career, he has played for many clubs. He played for his home county Northamptonshire until 2009. After that, he played for Sussex from 2010-2013. Then, he joined Essex and played for them from 2013-2015. He also played for the Lions in South Africa.

Records

There are not many records that the left arm spinner boasts of. However, he has had a fair deal of achievements. He won the NBC Denis Compton Award in 2001.

In 2007, he won the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award. The finest achievement of his career so far is that he was a member of the Ashes winning team in 2009 and 2010-11.

Retirement

Although Panesar has not officially declared his retirement from international cricket, he played his last test series in the year 2013. His ODI career was rather short lived.
