Shadman Islam made his first-class (FC) debut for Dhaka Metropolis against Khulna Division in Cox’s Bazar on April 12, 2014, in the National Cricket League. He made his List-A debut for Prime Bank Cricket Club against Victoria Sporting Club in Fatullah on November 12, 2014, in the Dhaka Premier Division. In the Bangladesh Premier League 2015-16 season, Islam made his T20 debut for Dhaka Dynamites against Chittagong Vikings in Mirpur on November 26, 2015. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for scoring 45 off 47 balls.

Shadman Islam made his Test debut for Bangladesh against the West Indies at Mirpur on November 30, 2018. He scored 76 runs in his maiden Test outing. Islam slammed his maiden Test hundred against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2021. He scored 115 off 196 balls in the third innings.
In September 2024, Islam became the first Bangladeshi opener to score a Test half-century in India.
