Jeevan Mendis: A Brief Biography

Jeevan Mendis Biography

Balapuwaduge Manukulasuriya Amith Jeevan Mendis is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who was born on 15th January 1983 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The all-rounder has represented Sri Lanka in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals. He is a left-handed batsman who is also used as a leg break bowler.

Background

Awarded the national schoolboy cricketer of the year in 2001, Mendis started his career when he made his international bow in a five-match series against Pakistan Under-19 team in the same year, followed by a place in the ICC Under-19 World Cup team of Sri Lanka in New Zealand two months later.

His all-round temperament earned him stints with the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.

He currently plays for Derbyshire Cricket team and in Sri Lankan domestic cricket, he has played for Tamil Union since the 2008–09 season. He also performed for Sri Lanka A and Sri Lanka Board XI.

Debut

Mendis debuted on 1 June 2010 in the third match of the Zimbabwe Triangular series. He bowled 4 overs, giving 12 runs and took two wickets but he did not get any opportunity to bat as his number didn't come up. He scored a decent 35 off 35 balls when he got a chance to bat in his second ODI.

His T20 debut for the national team came up in 2011 against England at Bristol.

Rise to Glory

Mendis came into everyone’s attention after the performance in the Under-19 cricket tournament. It was during this tournament that his right-arm spin caused trouble, claiming record-breaking figures of 7 wickets for 19 runs against Zimbabwe in the group stages.

In the opening match of 2012 World T20 against Zimbabwe, he scored a 43* from 30 balls which included four fours and a six. With the ball, he took 3 wickets by giving 24 runs from his 4 overs.

Low Points

Mendis had many ups and downs in his career as he was not performing consistently and was not a permanent part of the team.

Mendis featured in the first two matches of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup against New Zealand and Afghanistan before a hamstring injury ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament.

He is still eyeing a return to the national team as he last played for Sri Lanka in the year 2015.

Club Career

Mendis was part of the Delhi Daredevils in the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League. He played only three matches for the franchise and scored 23 runs with an average of 7.66 and could manage to take only one wicket.
