Deepak Chahar Career

At 18, Deepak Chahar made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2010-11 season for Rajasthan. Due to his excellent performance in domestic cricket, Deepak was picked up by IPL team Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2016. During his two-year stint (2016 and 2017) with RPS, Deepak Chahar seemingly impressed Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Ever since CSK’s return in 2018 after serving a two-year ban, he has played IPL for them under the leadership of MS Dhoni. He got his first international opportunity in 2018 itself, as Deepak Chahar made his India debut in a T20I against England. Soon after this, he cemented his place in the Indian team for white-ball formats.

Deepak Chahar Domestic Career

At the age of 16, the promising medium-pacer was rejected by the then-director of the Rajasthan Cricket Association Academy, Greg Chappell, in 2008. However, the gutsy pace bowler didn’t lose his heart and kept knocking around the gates of the state team and ultimately broke into it during the 2010-11 Ranji season.

A bowler in the mold of Praveen Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Chahar learned swing bowling in the coaching academy of his father, who would make sure his son bowled only with the new ball despite the financial strain of procuring so many new balls.

Chahar started his List A career by registering figures of 2 for 61 in the Central Zone encounter against Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in February 2010. He took 5 wickets in 3 matches.

In November, Chahar made a phenomenal first-class debut for Rajasthan by grabbing 8 wickets for 10 runs in the Group A encounter against Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy Plate League in Jaipur.

His sensational figure doused Hyderabad for the lowest team total in the Indian domestic circuit.

He attained the second-best bowling figures on his first-class debut. Chahar scalped four wickets in the second match against Goa in the first innings.

Chahar’s ability to swing the ball in both directions made him stand out in his debut Ranji campaign. In the Plate phase, he registered a brilliant tally of 30 wickets in 6 matches at 19.63, helping Rajasthan to qualify for the Elite phase.

In the Elite stage of 2010-11, he took 21 wickets in 8 matches at 37.66 to help his side win the maiden Ranji Trophy.

Chahar bowled exceptionally well in the 2017-2018 Syed Mushtaq Trophy, scalping 19 wickets in 9 matches at an astonishing average of 9.94.

He took five for 15 to skittle out star-studded Karnataka in the Super League stage. He also chipped in with 51 runs including a match-winning unbeaten 22 against Jharkhand in January 2018 at Eden Gardens.

Deepak Chahar IPL Career

On the back of his exceptional performances in the domestic circuit, Chahar was snaffled by Rising Pune Super Giants in 2016. Chahar played a total of five games in his first two seasons of IPL and returned with a solitary wicket. Chahar was roped in by Chennai Super Kings for INR 80 lakhs.

In the 2018 season, Chahar picked up 10 wickets in 12 games and showed that he had what it took to bowl on the biggest stage. The 2019 season was his breakthrough year as skipper Dhoni shrewdly used him with the new ball, often bowling three overs of his in the Powerplay. Chahar played 17 matches in the season and finished with 22 wickets at an average of 21.90 and a miser economy rate of 7.47.

Chahar was an exceptional performer in Chennai Super Kings' dismal campaign in IPL 2020 in UAE. The pace bowler picked 12 wickets at an average of 33 and bowled with an economy rate of 7.61.

Chahar picked 14 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 32.21 in CSK's title season in 2021. In the final against KKR, Chahar trapped Shubman Gill leg-before the wicket on 51. It was a very important wicket, in hindsight, as KKR had built a solid opening stand of 91 in a 193-run chase.

In the mega auction for IPL 2022, Chahar was purchased by CSK for a whopping sum of 14 crore. However, marred with multiple injuries meant the pacer had to pull out of the season despite hoping to return in the second of the tournament. Deepak returned in the 2023 IPL and took 13 wickets in 10 matches.

Deepak Chahar International career

Deepak Chahar was included in the squad for India's tour of England in 2018 for the T20I series. Later in the same year, the 31-year-old made his ODI debut during the Asia Cup. Deepak has yet to feature in Tests for India.

Deepak Chahar ODI Career

Deepak Chahar made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in the 2018 Asia Cup in UAE. He picked the wicket of Gulbadin Naib to register his maiden ODI wicket. More than a year later, Chahar got to play his second ODI against the West Indies.

In July 2021, Chahar was named to a second-tier India squad led by Shikhar Dhawan for the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka. He picked four wickets at an average of 22.50 as India beat Sri Lanka in the series by 2-1.

Chahar's batting abilities were revealed in the second ODI as he emerged a hero for the visitors when they were tattering at one stage. Chahar displayed dogged resistance and scored an unbeaten whirlwind 69 as India cruised to a two-wicket victory.

In January 2022, Chahar scored his second half-century in the third and final ODI against South Africa although India lost the match by four runs in the end. Chahar picked up 2 for 41 from 8 overs in the third ODI versus the West Indies.

In August 2022, Chahar returned to international cricket after an injury-hit break of six months. He registered his best ODI figures of 3/27 in the first game against Zimbabwe in Harare. He picked a couple more in the last ODI as India wrapped the series with a 3-0 whitewash.

Deepak Chahar last played an ODI in the second match of India's tour of Bangladesh in 2022. In this match, he bowled three overs and gave 12 runs without taking any wickets, as India lost by five runs while chasing 272.

Deepak Chahar T20I Career

In May 2018, Chahar was named in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against England. In his debut match against England, he dismissed Jason Roy. Deepak was subsequently selected for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh where he played a prominent role in winning the series against Bangladesh in the final match. He took the best bowling figures in T20Is, with six wickets for seven runs from 3.2 overs.

His world-record effort included a hat trick and came with a wet old ball in dewy conditions.

After his massive success against Bangladesh, Chahar continued in India's playing XI in all three T20Is against West Indies. He got three dismissals in the series at an average of 37.

Chahar played three more T20I matches against Australia in November but returned with a single wicket of Moises Henriques. The pacer played just one game against Sri Lanka before eight players were isolated after they were detected as close contacts of all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who tested positive for COVID-19.

Chahar tore a quadricep muscle during India's T20Is against the West Indies in February 2022. He returned to action in the shortest format during Asia Cup 2022 in UAE but played only one match against Afghanistan.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah for the South Africa series, Chahar paired with Arshdeep Singh for the new-ball duties. The pair ran through South Africa's batting order and reduced them to 9 for 5 in early overs. Chahar picked the wickets of Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs to finish his spell with 2/24.

Chahar was named in India's squad as a reserved player for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. He suffered a back injury and was ruled out of the showpiece event.

Deepak Chahar recovered from injury and made a comeback in 2023, but played only one match against Australia, and he has not played in the shortest format since then (as of May 2024).
