George Jesse Hill Jr. is a professional American basketball player born on May 4, 1986, in Indianapolis, USA. He plays point guard and is currently playing for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA league. George Hill belongs to the African American ethnicity and was the only child of his parents. He entered the league after joining the San Antonio Spurs in 2008. Hill has received several awards and honors during his tenure with Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. George also has played for many other NBA franchises throughout his career, including the Utah Jazz, Sacramento Kings, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Philadelphia 76ers.

George Hill Early Life

George Hill took birth in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 4, 1986. He is an African American and was the only child of his parents. His mother’s name is Tina Hill Woods and his father’s name is unknown. He was raised in Indianapolis and grew up looking up basketball players i.e. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan etc. Therefore, Hill was also dreaming of playing one day in the NBA.

George Hill attended Broad Ripple High School where he worked hard to carve his skills to be one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ from Indianapolis. The six others were Rodney Carney, Mike Conley Jr., Greg Oden, Eric Gordon, Courtney Lee, Josh McRoberts. Later, Hill decided to attend IUPUI despite many scholarship offers from other big conference schools. He also wanted to stay with his ailing great-grandfather, Gilbert Edison. However, Edison died but wished to see Hill playing basketball at the college level. Well, George led the IUPUI Jaguars to equal the best record in the conference. Hill left the university after becoming the fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,619 points.

George Hill NBA Journey

San Antonio Spurs

George Hill commenced his professional basketball journey in the NBA in 2008. He was drafted in the 2008 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs surprised many by picking Hill with their 26th pick in the first round. All were expecting that the Spurs would select Mario Chalmers. Hence, George became the 2nd first-round draft pick in the Summit League’s history. Also, he was the first athlete ever selected from IUPUI. He signed a two-year standard rookie contract with the franchise on September 23, 2008.

In his first summer league game on July 14, 2008, George Hill scored 17 points and 8 rebounds. He made only 2 of 25 shots and one of six three-pointers. Further, Hill played his NBA debut game for the Spurs against the Mavericks on November 4. He missed the first two matches of the season due to sprained left thumb and it was the 3rd match. He averaged 11 points, 1 steal, and 1 assist in a play of 15 minutes. In the next (2009-10) season, Hill improved himself a lot by working on his point guard skills. His playing time also increased from 16.5 minutes to 29 minutes. Incredibly, Hill registered his career high of 30 points in a lost game against the Houston Rockets on March 28, 2011.

Indiana Pacers

On June 23, 2011, George Hill was taken by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 NBA draft. He started the season as a backup for Darren Collision. Also, he missed 12 games due to an ankle injury on January 31, 2012. George returned on February 22 in a contest against the Charlotte Bobcats. He finished the season averaging 9.6 points per game. Hill re-signed with the Indiana Pacers with a five-year (US$40 million) contract on July 13, 2012.

In the NBA 2012-13 season, George Hill had his career-best game against the Blazers on February 7, 2014. He scored a career-high 37 points in that game along with 9 rebounds and 8 assists. He recorded his first career triple-double (15 points) on February 27, 2015.

Utah Jazz

In a three-team deal, Hill was traded to the Jazz, on July 7, 2016. The other two teams were the Pacers and the Hawks. He played his debut game for the Jazz against the Blazers on October 25. Hill recorded 19 points and 6 sixes in a 113-104 loss against the Blazers. Significantly, George was also named Western Conference Player of the Week (October 31 to November 6). On March 3, 2017, George gained a new season-high with 34 points in a 112-97 win over the Nets.

Sacramento Kings

George Hill agreed to a reported US$57 million (three-year) contract with the Kings on July 10, 2017. He spent only a season with the side.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Further, Hill was involved in a three-team deal with the Cavaliers on February 8, 2018.

Milwaukee Bucks

George Hill was traded to the Bucks in a five-player and three-team deal. He signed a three-year contract worth US$29 million to stay with the Bucks. He registered 19 points and 8 rebounds in a 129-112 win against the Cavaliers.

Oklahoma City Thunder

On November 24, 2020, Hill moved to Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he received a right thumb injury on January 24, 2021, and underwent surgery.

Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers acquired George Hill on March 25, 2021, and waived him on August 3 the same year.

Milwaukee Bucks

George Hill attended Broad Ripple High School and was a member of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ of Indianapolis. He became one of the state’s top high school players. He faced off the legends like Conley and Oden during his junior year. As a senior, he scored 36.2 points. It was the fifth-highest single-season average in the history of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. He was also named the Summit League Player of the Year in 2008.

Further, Hill attended Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) to stay closer to his great-grandfather Gilbert Edison. At IUPUI, he supported his team to equal the best record in the conference during his sophomore season.
