Makhaya Ntini: A Brief Biography

Makhaya Ntini Biography

Makhaya Ntini a former South African cricketer born on 6th of July,1977. He is a right arm fast bowler. “George” as he is fondly called, is the first ethnically black cricketer to represent South Africa in all formats of the game.

Background

In his early days, Ntini was recognized for his bowling ability and unique action. The 15-year old was given an opportunity in a small tournament held in King William’s town.

From bowling barefooted to quickly getting into South Africa Under-19 team within a span of just 2 years is a prize for his jaw dropping bowling.

Debut

He made Test debut in the year 1998 against Sri Lanka in Cape Town, while his ODI debut came in the same year against New Zealand at WACA, Perth.

He sealed his place in the side after 2 years of debut in 2000 bowling in tandem with Shaun Pollock.

Rise to glory

His first glory came at Lord's in 2003, when he took 10 wickets to become first South African to achieve such feat.

In 2006, he crushed Australia in an ODI with best figures of 6-22 for any bowler playing for South Africa.

He is the third South African bowler to take 300 test wickets after Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock. His 350th test victim was Alastair Cook in the year 2008.

Club cricket

He represented Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League for the first 3 seasons (2008-10) and was a part of English county team Kent.

Retirement

Ntini retired from international cricket in the year 2009 after playing his last Test against the English and ODI against the Australians. However he played his last international game (T20) in the year 2011 against India.

Coaching

He was appointed as an assistant coach for Zimbabwe in the year 2016 and later on became the interim head coach after the sacking of Dav Whatmore. He resigned the post of head coach in January 2018.
