Morne van Wyk: A Brief Biography

Morne Nico van Wyk Biography

Morne Van Wyk is a South African cricketer, born on 20th March 1979, in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The wicket-keeper right-handed batsman has played 17 ODI’s and eight T-20 matches for the Proteas.

Background

Wyk made his first-class debut in 1996-97 and hurried into South Africa U-19 team against England in 1997-98. The attacking batsman played a match-winning 86 in the first match of 1998 ICC U-19 World Cup against India.

His decision to open the innings for Free State in limited-overs matches brought out his natural attacking intent and the promising youngster accumulated a stack of runs in the domestic circuit.

Sensing good hand-eye coordination, Free State moulded Van Wyk as a permanent wicket-keeper and started his new job behind the stumps regularly in both formats in 2002-03.

Debut

His performance at the domestic level earned Van Wyk a place in South Africa team for the triangular series against England and Zimbabwe in 2003. Van Wyk made his ODI debut in the final against England in July 2017 at Lord’s, but could score only 17 runs.

He did not get to bat in his T-20 debut against Pakistan in February 2007. After 10 months, in his second game, he scored one run.

Rise to Glory

In his second stint at South Africa ODI team, the right-hander smashed 52 followed by 44 and 82 in the next two innings against India in 2007.

In the shortest format of the game, he scored the then fastest fifty by a South African batsman in just 24 deliveries. On Morne’s return to the national squad due to Quinton De Kock’s injury, Van Wyk played blistering innings of unbeaten 114 off 70 balls against West Indies in Kingsmead in 2015.

Low Points

Van Wyk could not exhibit his potentiality in the national jersey and could not make his intermittent opportunities counted. The emergence of AB de Villiers and presence of the legend like Mark Boucher behind the stumps did not help his cause.

Club Career

The veteran has an extensive club career with Dolphins, Eagles, and Knights. He captained Dolphins to the victory in the 2014 Ram Slam T20 Challenge. The wicket-keeper stepped down from the captaincy in February 2017 and currently plays for Dolphins.

Morne spent only one season in the Indian Premier League, representing Kolkata Knight Riders to score 167 runs in 5 matches.
