Stephen Fleming: A Brief Biography

Stephen Fleming Biography

Stephen Paul Fleming is a former cricketer from New Zealand, who also captained the team in all the three formats of cricket. He is the most successful Test Captain that New Zealand has ever had.

Fleming was born on 1 April 1973 in Christchurch, and was a top order batsman for the team.

Debut

Fleming played his first Test Match in 1994 in Hamilton against India in front of his home crowd.

Fleming scored his maiden Test Century in 1997 in Auckland where he scored 128 runs against England. Fleming soon replaced Lee Germon and became the youngest ever captain for New Zealand at the age of 23.

Rise to Glory

Stephen Fleming came into the limelight since the very beginning of his career. He flourished in his opening match itself. He is known for his elegance in his shots and is recognised for his flick off the pads, straight drive, cover drive and cut shots.

He is a productive slip catcher and fields intelligently in close-in positions. His best ODI innings was at the 2003 Cricket World Cup where he was unbeaten at 134 runs, which aided New Zealand in beating hosts South Africa.

Fleming is still New Zealand’s highest run getter in Tests and ODIs.

Club Career

Fleming played for Chennai Super Kings in the 2008 Indian Premier League after being bought for US$350,000. Fleming has played first-class county cricket clubs in England, Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Also, he led Nottinghamshire club in 2005 and they celebrated their first triumph in 18 years.

Captaincy

Under his captaincy, New Zealand won their only ICC Trophy, the ICC Knockout in 2000. He is primarily applauded for his captaincy.

Fleming's Record in Numbers

In April 2006, a Test between New Zealand and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, Fleming secured his third double-century and became the first Kiwi to achieve that feat.

In 2007 Cricket World Cup he scored 353 runs at an average of 39.22 and he was New Zealand's second highest run scorer in the tournament.

Fleming has taken 170 catches in Tests, the 3rd highest aggregate for a non-wicketkeeper.

Retirement

Fleming retired from all formats of the game in 2008, and post his retirement, he has served as a coach for various T20 teams around the world, most notably the Chennai Super Kings, with whom he has achieved incredible success.
