Abhishek Sharma Career
Abhishek Sharma has a bright future ahead of him thanks to his flamboyant style and elegant bat swing, coupled with useful slow left-arm orthodox. Being mentored by Indian legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, Sharma believes that when the ball is there to be hit, it stays hit and wants to establish his brand of fearless cricket.
Abhishek Sharma Domestic Career
On return from the victorious Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2018 campaign, Sharma featured in the 2018 Vijay Hazare Trophy for his state Punjab, although he made his List-A debut a year ago. And before the U-19 CWC, he debuted in the Ranji Trophy for Punjab carving out gutsy performances for his state side. He impressed on his maiden First-Class outing by scoring 94 runs in the second innings against Himachal Pradesh.
He featured in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup 2023 and finished as the top scorer for India A in the final against Pakistan A with 61 runs off just 51 balls, but could not get India A past the line as they lost by a huge margin of 128 runs.
Sharma had a terrific season with the bat in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24 where his team Punjab won the tournament and he earned the Player Of The Series award for scoring 485 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 192.46 and an average of 48.50, including two centuries.
Abhishek Sharma IPL Career
Acquired by Delhi Daredevils for INR 55 lakh (USD 85,000) at the IPL auction in January 2018. On May 12, 2018, he made his Twenty20 debut, playing for the Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 Indian Premier League, and went on to score 46 runs off just 19 balls. His whirlwind inning brought him a lot of eyeballs but unfortunately, he didn’t get much opportunity to showcase his talent.
In 2019, he was one of three players who went from Delhi to Sunrisers Hyderabad to pave the way for Shikhar Dhawan to move in the other direction. His Sunrisers Hyderabad debut came against Delhi itself where he took the big wicket of Colin Munro.
Sharma was retained ahead of the likes of Sunrisers legends David Warner and Rashid Khan for INR 6.50 crores ahead of the IPL 2022 auction which raised quite a few eyebrows. But Sharma justified his retention when the Sunrisers management entrusted the youngster as he found his groove as an opening batter as he started to improvise on his form. He scored 426 runs at a strike rate of 133.13 in IPL 2022 and scored 226 runs in IPL 2023 which turned out to be a disastrous season for the Sunrisers as they finished last on the table.
Backed by the management, Sharma formed a potent partnership with new Aussie recruit Travis Head as the deadly left-handed duo smashed records for fun and won matches at ease at the top of the order. They stitched 100+ partnerships twice within the powerplay, becoming the first duo to do so as records kept on tumbling.
He amassed 484 runs at a staggering strike rate of 204.22 and smashed three half-centuries as Sunrisers finished as the runners-up in IPL 2024. Though he had bossed the league stage, a beauty of a delivery by Mitchell Starc in the final of IPL 2024 cleaned him up for a single-digit score as Sunrisers were bowled out for the lowest score in an IPL final by the Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Though the 23-year-old all-rounder has found his rhythm with the bat, he is yet to fire with his slow left-arm orthodox and would be trying to take some wickets with the ball to make himself a formidable spin-bowling all-rounder.
Abhishek Sharma International Career
On the back of his IPL blitzkriegs, Abhishek Sharma was drafted into a new-look T20I side for India’s tour of Zimbabwe as the seniors were to be rested after sweating it out in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Abhishek Sharma T20I Career
Abhishek Sharma made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club in Harare, Zimbabwe on July 06, 2024. He was dismissed for a duck on debut and joined the likes of MS Dhoni, KL Rahul, and Prithvi Shaw as Zimbabwe stunned the T20 World Cup 2024 champions in the first T20I of the five-match series in a low-scoring affair.
With the second T20I played on the next day itself, Indian captain Shubman Gill opted to bat first to change fortunes. However, Gill, Sharma’s Under-19 CWC vice-captain and childhood friend, opened with him and was dismissed for a single-digit score. But Sharma decided to make amends himself and romp the African nation after he was dropped early in the innings by stitching a century partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Punjabi all-rounder showed shades of his Sunrisers self to score a half-century in 33 balls and decided to redeem himself by scoring the next 50 runs off just 13 balls. He accelerated to a 46-ball century in only his second T20I, twenty-four hours after facing a disappointing maiden outing.
With one Sharma in the form of Rohit calling time on his T20I career, it is safe to say that a new Sharma has arrived in the form of Abhishek who seems a like-for-like replacement for his very hitting ability.
Abhishek Sharma Captaincy
Abhishek Sharma led the India Under-19s to glory in the Under-19 Asia Cup 2016 by defeating Sri Lanka Under-19s in the final by a margin of 34 runs. The skipper Sharma led from the front with an all-round show of 29 runs and figures of 4/37.
He was India's captain for the Youth ODIs versus England at home in 2017, which India aced 3-1 until Prithvi Shaw replaced him at the helm for the return tour to England and continued so in the World Cup.
Abhishek Sharma Under-19 Career
Abhishek Sharma first came into the limelight with a century on his Under-19 debut for Punjab in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, before which he was the leading run-getter with 1200 runs at an average of 109.09 in the 2015-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, India's domestic U-16 tournament.
Sharma achieved a rare feat when he became the first cricketer to bag two prestigious BCCI awards - the Raj Singh Dungarpur award for being the highest scorer in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (2015-2016), and the Raj Singh Dungarpur award for being the highest wicket-taker in the same tournament with 57 wickets under his belt.
Sharma featured in all of India's games at the World Cup 2018, scoring an important 49-ball 50 to take India to 265 against Bangladesh in the quarterfinal as the Indian U-19 team finished the tournament on a high as winners.
