Mohammad Nawaz: A Brief Biography
Mohammad Nawaz is a young Pakistani cricketer who represents Pakistan in all three formats of International cricket. He was born on 21 March 1994 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
Nawaz is an all-rounder, who is a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler.
Mohammad Nawaz Background
Mohammad Nawaz started playing cricket at the age of 14 as a left-arm medium-fast bowler and a middle-order batsman. He then changed his bowling style to left-arm spin and transformed into a spin-bowling all-rounder.
He made his first-class debut in the year 2012, playing for Rawalpindi. In the four seasons of first-class cricket after his debut, Nawaz scored 1440 runs and took 44 wickets at an average of 24.4.
Mohammad Nawaz Debut
On the back of some exceptional performances in the Pakistan Super League, Nawaz made his T20 International debut for Pakistan against the United Arab Emirates in the 2016 Asia Cup. He was hit for 38 runs from three overs of his bowling in his debut match.
He made his One Day International debut against Ireland on 18 August 2016, scoring a half-century. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in Dubai on 13 October 2016. He picked up four wickets on his Test debut.

With Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan cementing their places in the national team, Nawaz doesn't get many opportunities to represent Pakistan. He couldn't make it to the Pakistan squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Apart from playing for Rawalpindi in first-class cricket, Nawaz also played for Rawalpindi Rams in the National T20 Cup. Currently, he plays for National Bank of Pakistan in the domestic circuit. He was bought by Quetta Gladiators for the 2016 Pakistan Super League.

Mohammad Nawaz Test Career
Mohammad Nawaz played his first Test match against West Indies on 13 October 2016 in Dubai, UAE. The premier all-rounder took four wickets in his first Test match but failed to score any runs.
His next couple of matches has also been against the West Indies in the same series. He failed to impress the selectors as he took only one wicket and scored a total of fifty runs in the two matches in Sharjah. Hence, Nawaz was dropped from the Pakistani Test squad after his first series and only got his next opportunity after a period of six years. In July 2022, Nawaz was included in the Pakistan squad for a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Nawaz, in the second innings of the first match, picked up his career-best Test bowling figures of five wickets for 88 runs. His next match was the last Test that he had played, in which he took a couple of wickets and scored 12 runs in both innings.
Mohammad Nawaz ODI Career
Mohammad Nawaz made his ODI debut against Ireland on 18 August 2016. In his first match, Nawaz took the wicket of Gary Wilson and also scored his maiden ODI half-century. Due to an impressive performance in his first match, Nawaz was included in a four-match ODI series against England, which occurred less than a week later. In the first two matches in England, Nawaz took the wickets of Jason Roy and Joe Root, respectively.
In the following couple of games against England, Nawaz struggled to pick up any wicket and went for runs. In the batting department, Nawaz performed moderately, with only one score above 30 in the four matches. Later in September, Nawaz played the West Indies in UAE. With the ball, Nawaz picked up his first 4-wicket haul in the first match of the series and also scored a handy 19 runs. He took another three wickets for forty runs in the third and final match of the West Indies tour.
In 2017, Nawaz got only one opportunity to play, which was against Australia in Brisbane. The following year, Nawaz was included in the Pakistan squad for the 2018 Asia Cup. He took three wickets in the first match against Afghanistan and scored ten runs.
The following two games were against India and Bangladesh, in which he did not manage to claim any wickets and scored a total of only 23 runs. Nawaz got to play one match in 2019 and 2021 against Sri Lanka and South Africa, respectively.
In 2022, Nawaz played in a couple of series against the West Indies and the Netherlands. Against the West Indies, Nawaz picked up seven wickets in three matches, including his career-best bowling figures of four wickets for nineteen runs. His next series against the Netherlands was also his last one. He played three ODIs in which he picked up four wickets and scored 31 runs.
Mohammad Nawaz T20I Career
Nawaz has been the most successful in the T20I format. His debut was against UAE in the 2016 Asia Cup on 29 February. He bowled three overs but failed to dismiss any batters. Then, his next match in the tournament was against Sri Lanka, in which he went for 38 runs in three overs and also failed to pick up any wickets.
Nawaz was dropped from the squad for the remainder of the tournament due to his poor bowling performance. Next, he played three matches against the West Indies. In the series, Nawaz picked up three wickets and also managed to bowl economical overs. A year later, Nawaz next featured in a match against the ICC World XI.
In January 2018, Nawaz played a single match against New Zealand in which he got to bat for the first time in T20Is. Nawaz did not pick up any wickets in the game but scored seven runs. A few months later, Nawaz played three T20Is against West Indies, in which he picked up four wickets and had an impressive economy rate of 5.34. After a gap of three years, Nawaz played T20I matches in 2021.
His first two series were both against South Africa. In the first series, Nawaz played three games in Pakistan in which he took a total of three wickets and scored 21 runs. Next, Nawaz went to South Africa and played four T20Is. He took a total of five wickets and scored 27 runs.
Nawaz played in another couple of series later that year against Bangladesh and West Indies. Having played three matches against both matches, Nawaz took two wickets and scored 22 runs against Bangladesh, and then against the West Indies, he took three wickets and scored 31 runs.
More recently, in 2022, Nawaz was included in the Pakistan squad for the 2022 Asia Cup held in UAE. In the opening match against India, Nawaz took a splendid three wickets for 33 runs. He took his career-best bowling figures of 3 wickets for five runs in the next game against Hong Kong.
The Pakistani team being heavily criticised for not utilising Nawaz’s batting potential, made Nawaz bat at no.4 . This decision worked a charm for the team as he scored a match-winning 42 off 20 balls against India in the third match of the tournament. Nawaz was named the player of the match for his outstanding batting display and also taking a wicket in the match.
In the next three games, Nawaz took only one wicket and scored a total of 36 runs. His next series was against England, in which he played seven matches and took a total of five wickets and scored 45 runs. Nawaz’s last series was a triangular series against New Zealand and Bangladesh in October. Nawaz took six wickets in five matches and scored a total of 107 runs. The premier all-rounder also registered his highest T20I score of 45 runs against Bangladesh in the series.
