Nathan Ellis Career
Nathan Ellis has made the hard yards to become the dependable pacer he is currently, after toiling in other professions including trying his hand out as a teacher’s aide, a laborer, and a gardener.
Nathan Ellis Domestic Career
Before making his domestic debut in the longer formats, Nathan Ellis debuted in a T20 for the Hobart Hurricanes against the Lahore Qalandars in the Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy held in 2018. Though the Hurricanes lost by a margin of 35 runs, Ellis was impressive with the ball as he picked up a wicket and was economical.
Ellis made his List-A debut in the Marsh Cup in the following year for Tasmania against Victoria in 2019. With the match going down to the wire and Victoria snatching a victory by 1 run, the New South Wales pacer yet again showed his class on his debut as he returned with figures of 3/35 at an economy of just 3.96.
Ellis had a great debut in the Sheffield Shield as he took 3 wickets in the first innings and returned with a six-wicket haul in the second innings against Western Australia in Hobart.
In the final of the Vitality Blast T20 2022, Ellis was involved in a last-over anti-climax when he charged off to celebrate victory against Lancashire Lightning, with the Lightning requiring 5 to win off the last ball. But Ellis was unaware he had bowled a no-ball and was off to celebrate the tentative victory. With the umpires calling back the players after the fireworks were burst, he had to re-bowl the last ball with 3 runs required now and a free hit to add insult to injury. Nevertheless, Ellis kept his cool as the Hampshire Hawks won an infamous victory by a margin of 1 run to lift the trophy.
Nathan Ellis IPL Career
Nathan Ellis was initially drafted as a replacement for his injured Australian counterpart Jhye Richardson in the middle of IPL 2021 by the Punjab Kings. He went wicketless in his maiden outing for the Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Ellis was bought by the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2022 mega auction for INR 75 lakhs, but only played in 2 matches and picked up 3 wickets. He was given a long run in the IPL 2023 season and was impressive enough, playing 10 matches and taking 13 wickets with a personal best of 4/30 against Rajasthan Royals.
However, due to team combination and limitations of playing with four overseas players, Ellis has not gotten enough opportunities to prove his mettle in the mega event, playing a solitary game in IPL 2024.
Nathan Ellis International Career
Nathan Ellis has been sturdy with the ball, but due to an experienced pace battery with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins in the mix, he has often been seen warming the bench.
Nathan Ellis ODI Career
Nathan Ellis made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Lahore on March 29, 2022. He was economical with the ball and picked up the prized wicket of centurion Imam-ul-Haq. Ellis has only played a handful of ODIs and will be looking to make more amends in the limited opportunities he gets.
Nathan Ellis T20I Career
Nathan Ellis made his T20I debut against Bangladesh in Mirpur on August 06, 2021. He surprised the cricketing world with a hat-trick in his maiden outing as he became the first bowler to achieve the feat on T20I debut and the third Aussie to do so in T20Is after Brett Lee and Ashton Agar.
Ellis returned with his career-best figures of 4/28 in a one-off T20I against Pakistan in 2022. He has spearheaded the Australian bowling attack on occasions when the main players are rested and has been selected for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
