Scott Michael Boland, popularly known as Scott Boland, is an Australian professional cricketer who was born on April 11, 1989, in Melbourne, Australia. He is a right-arm fast-medium pace bowler and a right-handed batter. Boland has represented the Australian cricket team across all formats.

He represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and plays for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL). In the Sheffield Shield, Boland is part of the Victoria cricket team.

Scott Boland Career

Following the footsteps of former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie, Scott Boland is only the second Indigenous cricketer to play Test cricket for the Australian men’s cricket team. According to Cricket Australia’s official website, Boland won the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year award for taking 45 wickets at an average of 19.8 in the 2018-19 domestic year. He was also named the Taverners Australia’s Indigenous Cricketer of the Year in the same season.

Scott Boland Domestic Career

Under the captaincy of David Hussey, Scott Boland made his domestic debut for Victoria against Western Australia in Melbourne on November 11, 2011, in the Sheffield Shield. He scored 9 runs in the first innings and took the wicket of the opposition skipper Marcus North on both occasions on his first-class (FC) debut.

A month later, Boland made his List-A debut for Victoria against Queensland in Melbourne on December 7, 2011, in the Ryobi One-Day Cup under the captaincy of Cameron White. He scored 9 runs off 7 balls in the first innings and went wicketless in the second.

In the Big Bash League 2013-14 season, Boland made his T20 debut for Melbourne Stars against Hobart Hurricanes in Melbourne on January 21, 2014. He picked up a couple of wickets in the form of tailenders Ben Laughlin and Ben Hilfenhaus.

According to Fox Sports, the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant signed Scott Boland for USD 103,000. In IPL 2016, he made his IPL debut against the Mumbai Indians in Pune on May 1, 2016.

In India’s tour of Australia 2016, Scott Boland made his international debut for the Australian men’s cricket team in an ODI. As of November 2024, he has played 27 international matches and taken 54 wickets.

Scott Boland made his ODI debut for Australia against India on January 12, 2016, in Perth. He went wicketless on his international debut and last played an ODI against South Africa on October 12, 2016, in Cape Town.

Scott Boland Test Career

Under the captaincy of Pat Cummins, Scott Boland made his Test debut for Australia against England in the third Test of The Ashes 2021-22 in Melbourne on December 28, 2021. In the first innings, he picked up the wicket of Mark Wood. However, Boland ripped through the batting line-up of England with a six-wicket haul and returned with a best bowling in innings (BBI) of 6/7 in the second innings. He was declared the ‘Player of the Match’ for his astounding debut.

Boland was instrumental in helping the Australian team win their maiden ICC World Test Championship in 2023. He picked up a couple of wickets in the form of Indian opener Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper KS Bharat in the first innings. He picked up a three-wicket haul in the second innings by taking the wickets of Gill, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

In the second T20I of India’s tour of Australia 2016, Scott Boland made his T20I debut for Australia in Melbourne on January 29, 2016. Under the captaincy of Aaron Finch, he went wicketless in his four-over spell.

Scott Boland is only the second male cricketer of Indigenous origin to play for Australia. According to The Indian Express, Boland came to know that his maternal grandfather was adopted originally and was of Indigenous origin in his 20s.
